Mathematics HELP Architecture | Foundations, Pillars and Runtime
Useful Mathematics help combines several things at once: understanding the learner, understanding the Mathematics, choosing an appropriate teaching response, giving enough practice, and checking that the learner can continue with less support.
Four foundations of useful help
- The learner: What is the student currently doing, understanding or finding difficult?
- The Mathematics: What idea, representation or earlier foundation matters for the current task?
- The teaching response: Is a question, example, hint, explanation or direct teaching most useful now?
- The evidence of improvement: Can the student handle a changed question with less support?
The main teaching pillars
- Diagnosis: distinguish the visible error from its possible cause.
- Explanation and representation: use words, diagrams, symbols, graphs and examples to make relationships visible.
- Practice and memory: retrieve, mix, revisit and apply ideas so they remain available.
- Transfer: change the surface of the problem so the learner must recognise the underlying Mathematics.
- Examination craft: make knowledge survive time, load, checking and paper conditions.
- Small-group orchestration: give different students different amounts of help while keeping one coherent lesson.
Why the system stays simple for the learner
A tutor may be considering several possible explanations internally, but the student normally needs one clear next step. The complexity belongs behind the teaching decision; the learner-facing explanation should be as clear and proportionate as possible.
Independence is the destination
A good support system should gradually make itself less necessary. Questions become prompts, prompts disappear, and the student increasingly identifies the Mathematics, chooses a route and verifies the result independently.
