HELP Task Warehouse | Diagnose, Teach, Practise, Transfer and Verify

Not every Mathematics question has the same job. Some questions help us understand a difficulty; others teach, practise, test transfer or check independence.

Different tasks for different jobs

• Diagnose: reveal what the student currently understands.
• Teach: make a new relationship or method clear.
• Practise: stabilise a capability through deliberate repetition and variation.
• Retrieve: bring earlier learning back without simply re-reading it.
• Transfer: change the surface so the student must recognise the underlying Mathematics.
• Verify: check whether the learner can continue with reduced support.

A worksheet can therefore be badly matched even when every question is mathematically correct. The important question is what the task is supposed to change in the learner.
