The first job is therefore to notice what kind of difficulty is happening before deciding how much assistance to give.
A simple ladder of help
- Wait when the student is still making useful progress.
- Ask a question to understand the student’s current thinking.
- Reframe the problem or show it in a clearer representation.
- Give a cue or small hint if one missing relationship is stopping progress.
- Model or teach when a concept or method genuinely needs reconstruction.
- Practise with support, then reduce prompts.
- Test independently with a changed question.
For students
Help should make the Mathematics more visible without doing all the important thinking for you. A good sign of progress is that you need less help on the next question.
For parents
More worksheets or more tuition time are not automatically better. Useful help identifies what is preventing progress, chooses a sensible next action and checks whether the improvement lasts.
