Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is one of the main international Mathematics routes in the BTT World Mathematics Examinations system. Cambridge publishes 0580 by examination year. Candidates taking the examination in 2027 use the 2025–2027 syllabus; candidates taking it in 2028 move to the 2028–2030 syllabus. Cambridge’s own qualification page should therefore be treated as the rule source for the examination year that applies. For examinations from 2025, Cambridge rebalanced the assessment so that one paper at each tier is a dedicated non-calculator paper. That change does not mean “mental Mathematics only”; it means learners need reliable arithmetic, algebraic manipulation, exact-value control and checking without depending on a calculator as the first move.
Core and Extended are different examination routes
0580 is tiered. Core and Extended share a substantial mathematical foundation, but Extended carries the broader and deeper route. Preparation should therefore begin by identifying the learner’s actual entry tier rather than using generic IGCSE worksheets.

What the non-calculator paper changes
A non-calculator paper exposes weaknesses that a calculator can hide: fraction arithmetic, powers and roots, exact values, rearrangement, estimation and whether the learner notices an unreasonable result. Strong preparation therefore alternates calculator-enabled work with deliberate no-calculator retrieval rather than leaving non-calculator practice until the final weeks.
A four-layer preparation system
- Map the current syllabus. Use the examination-year syllabus, not an old topic list.
- Diagnose prerequisite gaps. Use Mathematics Diagnosis to locate the first weak link.
- Repair through stable Mathematics owners. Do not use past papers as the only teaching material.

2025–2027 versus 2028–2030
Cambridge has already published both syllabus cycles. The 2028–2030 syllabus states that there are no significant changes affecting teaching compared with the preceding cycle, while still remaining the authoritative document for examinations in those years.
