International School to MOE Mathematics | Gap Map and Transition Guide

Moving from an international school into Singapore’s MOE Mathematics system is not simply a change of school. The learner may be entering a different sequence, notation culture, examination rhythm and expectation of independent mathematical execution.

The correct response is not to reteach everything. The goal is to identify the smallest set of missing prerequisites that the destination class already assumes.

Build the gap map by mathematical object

  • Number and arithmetic
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Ratio, rate and proportion
  • Algebraic manipulation
  • Functions and graphs
  • Geometry and measurement
  • Trigonometry
  • Probability and statistics
  • Problem representation and multi-step reasoning

Three kinds of “gap”

Knowledge gap: the learner has not yet studied a required concept. Sequence gap: the previous curriculum planned the concept for later. Translation gap: the Mathematics is understood, but the destination uses unfamiliar notation, representation or question style.

Do not confuse unfamiliarity with weakness

A learner who has never used a Singapore-style bar model may still understand ratio very well. A learner familiar with graphing technology may understand functions but be less fluent in symbolic manipulation without tools. The diagnostic should identify what is mathematically missing versus what simply needs adaptation.

A transition sequence

  1. Obtain the destination year/subject syllabus.
  2. Review the learner’s recent assessed work.
  3. Run mixed prerequisite probes.
  4. Classify gaps as knowledge, sequence or translation.
  5. Repair only the dependencies needed immediately.
  6. Train MOE-style independent execution and checking.
  7. Re-test after several weeks in the new environment.

Use Mathematics Diagnosis, the Singapore Mathematics Curriculum Overview and the Knowledge Warehouse as the three main transition tools.
