Singapore vs US Mathematics | Grade Levels, Common Core, Algebra and Course Sequence

There is no single U.S. Mathematics curriculum to compare with Singapore. U.S. standards, course sequences and textbooks vary by state, district and school. Common Core provides standards in participating jurisdictions, but local implementation can still differ substantially.

Singapore is more nationally sequenced

Singapore’s national curriculum gives a more consistent school-level sequence. U.S. learners may instead come from Common-Core-aligned or non-Common-Core states, traditional Algebra I/Geometry/Algebra II sequences, integrated Mathematics courses, accelerated tracks or locally designed programmes.

Common Core Mathematical Practices overlap with Singapore problem solving

The Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice emphasise problem sense-making, abstract and quantitative reasoning, argument, modelling, strategic tools, precision, structure and repeated reasoning. These are compatible with many Singapore Mathematics goals, even when grade-level sequencing or classroom representations differ.

Transfer risks

  • A U.S. student may have studied geometry as a dedicated course while a Singapore student encountered geometry integrated across years.
  • An accelerated U.S. student may reach algebraic topics earlier but have different experience with non-routine word problems.
  • A Singapore student entering the U.S. may repeat some content while encountering unfamiliar course organisation or technology use.
  • Textbook labels do not prove identical standards coverage.

Crosswalk by knowledge object

Audit number, fractions/percentages, ratio, algebra, functions, geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics independently. Then map those results to the destination school’s actual course—not to a generic “Grade 8” or “Secondary 2” equivalence.

Singapore and US Mathematics: map grade sequences without pretending one-to-one equivalence

Age/grade labels are approximate

Singapore Primary/Secondary levels and US grades are organised differently. A conversion table is only a starting orientation.

Compare strands

Map number, fractions, ratio, algebra, geometry, statistics and functions across the learner’s actual curricula.

Course naming diverges in secondary school

US students may encounter Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus and AP courses, while Singapore uses integrated Mathematics and Additional Mathematics routes before JC.

Integrated versus separated courses change the gap pattern

A US student may have deep geometry from a dedicated course but different algebra sequencing. Diagnose by domain.

Calculator use varies

US courses and tests can be technology-rich; Singapore national examinations have their own rules. Transfer preparation must include destination conditions.

Proof expectations vary

A US Geometry course may include formal proof styles unfamiliar to a Singapore student, while Singapore A-Math may emphasise other symbolic techniques.

Fractions and ratio remain high-leverage transfer checks

Weakness here can masquerade as algebra difficulty in either system.

AP is not the same as Singapore H2

AP Calculus/Statistics are subject courses with their own specifications; H2 Mathematics combines a different set of content and assessment. Compare modules directly.

Placement should use evidence

Recent schoolwork, a domain diagnostic and destination syllabus are stronger than age-based conversion.

Moving to Singapore

Confirm school placement and subject level through the appropriate school/MOE process. A curriculum crosswalk cannot make the official decision.

Moving to the US

Identify district graduation requirements and course prerequisites because they vary locally.

Transfer principle

Preserve what the learner knows, translate notation/terminology, then teach only genuine missing prerequisites.
