IGCSE 0580 Extended topics cover the full Cambridge Mathematics 0580 Extended route, from number and algebra through geometry, trigonometry, vectors, probability and statistics. Extended is the wider of the two 0580 tiers and provides access to the full A*–E grade range under the A*–G grading route. For the 2027 examination, candidates remain on the 2025–2027 syllabus generation.
From the 2025 syllabus generation, one paper at each tier is a dedicated non-calculator paper. Extended candidates therefore need both exact/manual fluency and calculator-supported problem solving; preparation cannot be built around a calculator-only workflow.
Extended topic map
- Number: operations, fractions/percentages, ratio/proportion, standard form, estimation and bounds.
- Algebra and graphs: expressions, equations, inequalities, functions/graphs, sequences and variation.
- Coordinate geometry: gradient, equations of lines and coordinate relationships.
- Geometry: angle and shape properties, similarity/congruence, circle geometry and constructions.
- Mensuration: perimeter, area, surface area and volume.
- Trigonometry: right/non-right triangle reasoning and related geometry.
- Transformations and vectors: mappings, scale/rotation/reflection/translation and vector representation.
- Probability: single/combined events and representation of outcomes.
- Statistics: data representation, averages/spread and interpretation.
Extended preparation should be dependency-first
If algebraic manipulation is unstable, functions, graphs and trigonometric modelling become slower. If fractions/ratio are weak, percentage, probability and similarity become fragile. Repair the earliest dependency rather than attempting endless mixed past papers.
About the A* threshold
There is no single permanent raw-mark A* threshold for 0580. Cambridge publishes grade-threshold tables by examination series and component combination after the examination. March, June and November sessions can therefore have different thresholds while maintaining the intended grade standard.
Historical threshold tables are useful for understanding past performance but should not become the revision target. A student should prepare to solve the Mathematics securely with margin for paper-to-paper difficulty variation.
Calculator / non-calculator preparation
- Maintain fraction, surd, algebra and exact-number fluency without technology.
- Use calculators efficiently for numerical work where permitted.
- Estimate first so implausible calculator outputs are caught.
- Practise the actual paper mode rather than doing every worksheet under identical conditions.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended: turn the topic map into a preparation system
Extended preparation begins with the current syllabus
Use the official syllabus for the examination year as the scope owner. Topic lists on revision sites can help navigation, but they should not override current Cambridge content or assessment arrangements.
Number and algebra are foundational
Percentages, ratio, standard form, indices, equations and manipulation feed many later topics. Diagnose these early because weakness here spreads into geometry, functions and applied questions.
Functions and graphs require interpretation
Students should connect equations, tables and graphs, identify gradients and intersections and use graphical or numerical solutions appropriately.
Geometry and mensuration need diagram discipline
Do not trust scale. Mark known facts, identify the relevant theorem or formula and keep units consistent. Three-dimensional questions often become manageable when the required triangle or cross-section is isolated.
Trigonometry is a representation choice
Right-triangle ratios, sine/cosine rules and other syllabus methods apply to different configurations. Draw and label before selecting a formula.
Statistics requires reading the representation
Tables, cumulative frequency, histograms or other current syllabus displays should be interpreted from axes, class widths and definitions rather than recognised only by appearance.
Probability should be organised
Use sample spaces, trees or tables when they make outcomes visible. Conditional structure and without-replacement situations need careful denominator updates.
Calculator fluency should support estimation
Know the permitted calculator and common functions, but estimate order of magnitude and preserve enough exact working to detect entry errors.
Thresholds are not permanent grade guarantees
Cambridge grade thresholds vary by examination series and paper difficulty. Historical thresholds can provide context but should not be presented as a fixed score required for a future grade.
Paper review
Classify mistakes by concept, representation, algebra, calculator, units, rounding, reading or timing. Repair the recurring mechanism before sitting another full paper.
Mixed retrieval
After topic repair, interleave domains so the student must identify the method. Full-paper readiness requires selection under uncertainty, not only chapter fluency.
Keep volatile facts dated
Paper codes, calculator arrangements and thresholds should be checked against current official Cambridge information. The durable value of this owner is the learning and preparation architecture.
