Singapore’s Integrated Programme runs for six years and can
lead to the GCE A-Level, the IB Diploma or the NUS High

Secondary 4 leaving examination, and each IP school builds
a programme around its own strengths. This creates freedom,
but it also means the pace, depth and order of Mathematics
can differ from school to school.
A capable IP student may struggle because earlier algebraic
fluency was assumed, topics were compressed, unfamiliar
problems arrived before methods became stable, or there was
no major national checkpoint to expose the weak link early.
Tuition must therefore map the student’s actual school
route, not force every IP learner through a generic

IB Mathematics
The IB Diploma currently offers Mathematics: Analysis and
Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation,
each at Standard Level or Higher Level. These are not simply

modelling, technology and future academic intention.
Students must learn concepts, communicate working, solve
unfamiliar problems, use technology appropriately and
complete the mathematical exploration with integrity.
Course selection can also matter because universities may
set programme-specific Mathematics prerequisites. The useful
question is therefore not only “Which course can I score in?”
but “Which course prepares me for the corridor I may
later want?”

IGCSE Mathematics
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics develops fluency, reasoning,
problem-solving and mathematical communication, with tiered
routes that allow students to progress at an appropriate
level. Some students also take Cambridge IGCSE Additional
Mathematics, which raises the algebraic and abstract demand
and prepares learners for more advanced study.
The challenge is often not a lack of effort. It may be a
mismatch between the student’s syllabus code, Core or
Extended route, calculator and non-calculator demands,
command words, expected presentation or school sequence.

Advanced programmes expose small weaknesses quickly.
Algebra that was once “good enough” becomes the language of

The visible result may be unfinished papers, careless errors,
