GCSE Mathematics Higher Tier | Grade 9 Topic Map and Preparation

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

There is no separate official “Grade 9 syllabus” in GCSE Mathematics. Higher Tier covers grades 4–9, and the highest grades come from secure control of the full Higher content plus the ability to combine ideas flexibly in unfamiliar problems.

Higher Tier content that often separates stronger candidates

  • Surds and fractional indices
  • Algebraic proof and complex manipulation
  • Quadratic and simultaneous-equation reasoning
  • Functions and iteration
  • Direct and inverse proportion
  • Circle theorems and geometric proof
  • Vectors used in geometric arguments
  • Advanced trigonometry and exact values
  • Bounds and error intervals
  • Probability reasoning and conditional structure
  • Interpreting and comparing statistical distributions

But Grade 9 is not won by “Grade 9 topics” alone

AQA states that all content can be assessed on Higher Tier papers and that questions can draw together different topic areas. A candidate aiming at the top of the range therefore needs accuracy on ordinary material as well as strength on higher-only content.

Three preparation layers

  1. Foundation reliability: remove avoidable errors in arithmetic, ratio, algebra and geometry.
  2. Higher-only depth: learn proof, vectors, surds, advanced algebra and geometry properly.
  3. Integration: practise problems where the topic is not announced and several areas interact.
