OCR A-Level Further Mathematics B (MEI) H645 is a distinct Further Mathematics route developed with Mathematics in Education and Industry. Unlike OCR H245, it uses one long mandatory Core Pure paper and then a flexible major/minor option system. For some candidates this creates a course that is much more configurable around Mechanics, Statistics, algorithms, numerical methods or additional pure Mathematics.
For students searching for OCR Further Maths B MEI H645, this page owns the current paper structure, route choices, option system, preparation strategy and the current withdrawal timetable for the Further Pure with Technology option.
This distinction matters because “OCR Further Maths” can refer to two different specifications. H245 is Further Mathematics A. H645 is Further Mathematics B (MEI). Their mathematical foundations overlap strongly, but the assessment architecture is not the same.

| Y422 Statistics Major | 2 hours 15 minutes | 120 | 33⅓% |
| Minor option | Usually 1 hour 15 minutes | 60 | 16⅔% |
| Y436 Further Pure with Technology | 1 hour 45 minutes | 60 | 16⅔% |
Three valid A-Level routes
- Route A: Core Pure + Mechanics Major + one eligible minor.
- Route B: Core Pure + Statistics Major + one eligible minor.
- Route C: Core Pure + three minor options, with no major option.
The route is therefore not a cosmetic choice. It determines the balance of the candidate’s Further Mathematics course. The correct preparation system starts by identifying the exact route and paper entry rather than using generic “OCR Further Maths” materials.
Core Pure: one long paper, half the qualification
H645 concentrates the mandatory pure material into one 2 hour 40 minute paper worth 50% of the qualification. The Core Pure content includes proof, complex numbers, matrices and transformations, vectors and three-dimensional space, algebra, series, calculus, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations.
The longer paper changes execution. Students need depth, but they also need concentration management. A difficult early question should not be allowed to consume the time required for later problems. Long-form practice should therefore include deliberate skip-return decisions and checkpoints.
Major options
Mechanics Major Y421
The Mechanics Major includes dimensional analysis, forces, work, energy and power, momentum and impulse, circular motion, Hooke’s law, centre of mass, and vector/variable-force ideas. Representation comes first: diagrams, assumptions, units and sign conventions should be set before equations are manipulated.
Statistics Major Y422
The Statistics Major includes sampling, discrete and continuous random variables, bivariate data, chi-squared tests, inference and simulation. Calculator or technology use should support statistical reasoning rather than replace understanding of the model and its assumptions.
Minor options
- Y431 Mechanics Minor — a smaller applied Mechanics route.
- Y432 Statistics Minor — sampling, random variables, bivariate data and chi-squared work.
- Y433 Modelling with Algorithms — algorithms, networks and linear programming.
- Y434 Numerical Methods — errors, equation solving, numerical differentiation/integration and approximation.
- Y435 Extra Pure — recurrence relations, groups, matrices and multivariable calculus.
- Y436 Further Pure with Technology — curves, differential equations and number theory investigated using mathematical technology.
Important 2026–2028 change: Y436 is being withdrawn
OCR states that it will stop offering the Further Pure with Technology Y436 optional paper. The final first-teach date is September 2026 and the final assessment opportunity is June 2028. This is a withdrawal of that option, not a withdrawal of the H645 qualification itself.
Students and centres planning H645 routes across the transition should therefore verify whether Y436 remains available for the candidate’s cohort. Older textbooks and route diagrams may still show the option long after it stops being a live choice for new cohorts.
Why the MEI route is mathematically interesting
H645 offers options that connect unusually well to modern quantitative study. Modelling with Algorithms creates a bridge into optimisation and Computer Science. Numerical Methods addresses problems where exact closed-form solutions are unavailable. Extra Pure introduces ideas such as groups and multivariable calculus. The technology option, while it remains available to applicable cohorts, explicitly incorporates computational tools.
Do not confuse computational tools with mathematical understanding
Technology can reveal patterns, approximate solutions and explore families of functions. The student still needs to understand what the computation represents and whether the output is mathematically plausible. This principle applies equally to numerical methods, statistics and technology-rich pure work.
Prerequisite repair still comes first
H645 assumes A-Level Mathematics. Recurring failures in algebra, calculus or vectors should be repaired at the prerequisite layer through BTT’s Algebra, Calculus and Vectors & Coordinate Geometry owners rather than being mislabelled as “Further Maths difficulty”.
H645 versus H245
OCR H245 Further Mathematics A uses two mandatory Pure Core papers and two options chosen from Statistics, Mechanics, Discrete Mathematics and Additional Pure Mathematics. H645 instead uses one longer Core Pure paper and a major/minor route system with a wider family of options.
H645 versus AQA and Edexcel
AQA 7367 and Pearson Edexcel 9FM0 organise Further Mathematics around a common pure core plus options, but neither uses H645’s major/minor route architecture. Students transferring resources between boards should therefore separate the reusable Mathematics from the board-specific examination structure.
Compare with AQA A-Level Further Mathematics 7367 and Pearson Edexcel A-Level Further Mathematics 9FM0.
Current-source note
Checked 26 September 2026. OCR’s current H645 specification requires the mandatory Y420 Core Pure paper and one of three routes: Mechanics Major plus a minor, Statistics Major plus a minor, or three minors. OCR currently lists the Y436 Further Pure with Technology option for applicable cohorts while also stating that its final first teach is September 2026 and final assessment is June 2028.
