South Africa NSC Mathematics is the Grade 12 Mathematics route within the National Senior Certificate. It should be distinguished from Mathematical Literacy and Technical Mathematics, which are separate subjects with different examination purposes.
The Department of Basic Education’s official 2026 timetable schedules Mathematics Paper 1 for 23 October 2026 and Mathematics Paper 2 for 26 October 2026, both at 09:00 and both three hours long.
CAPS is the curriculum layer
The Grade 12 examination should be read together with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement and DBE examination guidance. The mathematical route includes algebra/functions, calculus, probability/statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry and related senior-secondary topics.
Use recent DBE papers
DBE publishes recent examination papers and memoranda, including 2026 May/June Mathematics Paper 1 and Paper 2. These are valuable for format and marking practice after the learner’s underlying Mathematics is secure.
Preparation sequence
- Confirm that the learner is preparing for Mathematics, not Mathematical Literacy.
- Map Paper 1 and Paper 2 topic demands against current knowledge.
- Repair algebra and functions before adding more timed work.
- Maintain trigonometry, geometry, probability/statistics and calculus continuously.
- Use recent DBE papers and memoranda to train method visibility and examination control.
