OxfordAQA International AS and A-Level Further Mathematics 9665 is the current advanced Mathematics route for students who already have a strong ordinary AS/A-Level Mathematics foundation and intend to pursue mathematically demanding study.
OxfordAQA has announced a revised Further Mathematics 9765 specification for first teaching from 2027, with first AS exams from May/June 2028 and first A2 exams from May/June 2029. Current candidates should not mix the revised 9765 generation with the live 9665 specification.
Current 9665 unit structure
- FP1: Pure Mathematics (AS)
- FPSM1: Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics (AS)
- FP2: Pure Mathematics (A2)
- FS2 or FM2: Further Statistics or Further Mechanics (A2)
Under the current route, the final A2 applied option is either Further Statistics or Further Mechanics. Scientific calculators are permitted under the current assessment structure, and units may be re-sat.
What becomes more advanced?
- Matrix algebra and systems of linear equations
- More advanced pure Mathematics
- Statistical estimation and further hypothesis testing
- Moment-generating functions and further probability ideas
- Advanced Mechanics: projectiles, elastic strings/springs, collisions, differential-equation applications and simple harmonic motion
Preparation rule
Further Mathematics should extend an already functioning Mathematics foundation. If ordinary calculus, algebra, vectors or probability are unstable, repair them before adding the Further Mathematics layer.
