IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Mathematics is the IB Mathematics route before the Diploma Programme. It develops mathematical inquiry, modelling and problem solving across number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability.
MYP Mathematics is a framework rather than one globally identical textbook sequence. Schools can organise learning locally while working toward common IB objectives. Students can work at two levels of challenge: Standard Mathematics and Extended Mathematics.
Standard and Extended Mathematics
Standard Mathematics aims to give all learners a sound foundation in mathematical principles and the skills needed to meet MYP objectives. Extended Mathematics adds greater breadth and depth and is designed to prepare students for stronger further-study routes, including higher-level Mathematics later in the IB pathway.
MYP eAssessment
IB offers optional MYP on-screen examinations. Mathematics and Extended Mathematics are both available as on-screen subjects. IB describes these as two-hour examinations held in May or November and designed around authentic MYP assessment, conceptual understanding and application in unfamiliar contexts.
Mathematics eAssessment is currently available in English, French and Spanish; Extended Mathematics is listed in English and French. Availability and registration remain governed by the current MYP Assessment Procedures.
MYP grades and certificate route
IB MYP course results report grades from 1 to 7. The full MYP certificate requires a broader group of eAssessments and programme requirements; Mathematics is one component rather than the whole certificate.
Transition into Diploma Programme Mathematics
MYP Mathematics should build the algebra, functions, geometry, statistics, probability, modelling and technology habits needed for later DP Mathematics. The eventual choice between Mathematics AA and Mathematics AI, at SL or HL, should still be made from actual prerequisite control and future university requirements.
Preparation route
- Confirm whether the student is following Standard or Extended Mathematics.
- Map the school’s local MYP sequence to the stable mathematical objects.
- Practise unfamiliar-context problems rather than chapter templates only.
- If taking eAssessment, train on-screen interpretation and mathematical communication.
