HKDSE Mathematics has a Compulsory Part and an optional Extended Part. Candidates may take the Compulsory Part alone, or the Compulsory Part together with Module 1: Calculus and Statistics or Module 2: Algebra and Calculus. HKEAA does not permit a candidate to enter both M1 and M2 in the same examination year.
This structure makes route identification essential. “HKDSE Maths” may mean the Compulsory Part only, Compulsory + M1, or Compulsory + M2. Preparation materials should therefore match the candidate’s actual combination.
Compulsory Part
The 2026 assessment framework uses two public-examination papers for the Compulsory Part. Paper 1 contains conventional questions and carries 65% of the public-examination weighting; Paper 2 contains multiple-choice questions and carries 35%. The Mathematics draws on secondary-school foundations and the full Compulsory Part.
Module 1: Calculus and Statistics
M1 combines calculus with statistics. Students therefore need both symbolic control and statistical interpretation. Weak algebra can damage calculus performance, while weak probability and data reasoning can make the statistics half of the route unstable.
Module 2: Algebra and Calculus
M2 places greater emphasis on algebraic structure and calculus. It is not simply a longer Compulsory paper: the prerequisite burden is higher, and students should treat functions, algebra and calculus as an integrated system.

- Repair algebra before advanced calculus work.
- For M1, keep statistics active throughout the year rather than postponing it.
- Use HKEAA papers for final examination conversion after concept repair.
Students moving from Singapore SEC/JC, IB or Cambridge routes should use the World Mathematics Curriculum Crosswalk because similarly named topics may appear at different depth or in a different examination style.

The Compulsory Part is the common foundation
Students should build secure number/algebra, functions, geometry, statistics and other current HKDSE domains according to the HKEAA curriculum.
M1 and M2 are extension modules with different emphasis
M1 is commonly associated with calculus/statistics emphasis and M2 with algebra/calculus emphasis, but students should use current HKEAA documents for exact content.
Do not treat M1 and M2 as interchangeable difficulty labels
They support different mathematical experiences and school/university routes. Course choice belongs to the student’s school and future needs.
Algebra is the shared infrastructure
Equation manipulation and functions support both the compulsory course and extensions.
Calculus needs conceptual control
Where used, derivatives and integrals should be connected to rate, graph and accumulation rather than formula recall.
Statistics requires interpretation
For M1/statistical work, model assumptions and conclusions matter alongside calculation.
Past papers teach HKEAA style
Use official papers/marking information where available and classify errors by content, method and communication.
