Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 is the advanced upper-secondary Mathematics route for learners who need a stronger bridge into post-16 Mathematics. It extends ordinary IGCSE Mathematics through deeper algebra, functions, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus and related reasoning.
Cambridge currently publishes separate 2025–2027 and 2028–2030 syllabus cycles for 0606. The syllabus year is the examination year, so resources should be matched to the year the candidate will actually sit the paper.
For examinations from 2025, Cambridge introduced a dedicated non-calculator paper as part of the assessment. That makes exact symbolic control, algebraic fluency, trigonometric knowledge, manipulation and estimation materially important.
0606 is not just “more 0580”
0580 and 0606 overlap in mathematical language, but 0606 asks for more symbolic independence and prepares learners for deeper Mathematics. Students should be able to manipulate expressions reliably, control domains and conditions, interpret functions and graphs, and work with calculus rather than treating every question as a familiar template.
Core knowledge routes
Preparation order
- Repair algebra before adding more calculus.
- Train exact and non-calculator work throughout the course.
- Link equations to graphs and functions rather than learning procedures separately.
- Use mixed problems to test method selection.
- Use past papers only after topic-level control is reasonably stable.
Progression
0606 can support progression into Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics 9709 and other senior-secondary Mathematics routes. Use the World Mathematics Curriculum Crosswalk when transferring to IB, Singapore JC Mathematics or another system.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606: build the bridge from IGCSE Mathematics to advanced algebra and calculus
0606 is an advanced secondary Mathematics course
It extends ordinary IGCSE Mathematics into stronger algebra, functions, trigonometry and calculus-style work according to the current Cambridge syllabus. Students should not treat it as merely a harder version of the same paper.
Algebra is the prerequisite spine
Factorisation, equations, indices, surds and symbolic manipulation need enough fluency to support longer questions. Diagnose algebra before assuming a new topic is the problem.
Functions connect equations and graphs
Domain, range, composite/inverse ideas and graph behaviour should be linked. Students should move among symbolic and graphical representations.
Trigonometry needs identity control
Equations, identities and graph relationships require exact manipulation and correct interval handling.
Calculus introduces rate and accumulation
Differentiation and integration should be connected to graph gradient, stationary points and area rather than taught as isolated recipes.
Coordinate geometry links algebra to space
Line conditions, intersections and geometric relationships should be sketched before calculation.
Working matters
Advanced multi-step questions benefit from visible transformations and exact values. Clear working supports both checking and applicable method credit.
Calculator rules are syllabus-specific
Use the current Cambridge 0606 specification and examination instructions rather than assuming the rules from 0580 or another board.
Past papers should diagnose
After each paper, classify errors by prerequisite, method selection, algebra, calculator, notation or timing, then repair before repeating full papers.
Transfer
The course is valuable preparation for later advanced Mathematics when students understand the structures rather than memorise 0606 question templates.
