AP Calculus AB and BC | Course, Exam Format and Preparation Guide

AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC are introductory college-level calculus courses. College Board describes BC as developing understanding of differential and integral calculus through graphical, numerical, analytical and verbal representations; AB and BC share a substantial calculus spine, while BC extends beyond AB.

For the May 2027 exams, College Board has updated the number and timing of multiple-choice questions. Both AB and BC are hybrid digital exams: students complete multiple choice and view free-response questions in Bluebook, then handwrite free-response answers in paper booklets.

2027 exam format

College Board lists 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes, worth 50% of the score: 29 questions in a calculator-not-permitted part and 13 in a graphing-calculator part. The free-response section has six questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, also worth 50%: two calculator-required problems followed by four calculator-not-permitted problems.

Calculus should be learned as structure

Strong AP Calculus preparation connects limits, rates of change, accumulation, differential equations and function behaviour. Students who memorise derivative and integral recipes without understanding graphs and definitions become fragile on conceptual or unfamiliar free-response problems.

Preparation spine

  1. Secure functions, graphs, algebra and trigonometry before blaming calculus.
  2. Move between graphical, numerical, analytical and verbal representations.
  3. Practise calculator and non-calculator modes every week.
  4. Write full free-response reasoning, including units and interpretation where relevant.
  5. Use released free-response questions to study scoring expectations after concept control is established.

AP Calculus AB and BC: learn calculus as a connected representation system

AB and BC are distinct course scopes

BC includes additional content beyond AB under the current College Board framework. Students should prepare the exact course and exam.

Limits establish local behaviour

Understand graphical, numerical and algebraic representations of limits and continuity rather than memorising indeterminate-form tricks.

Derivatives describe change

Rules for products, quotients, composites and implicit relationships should connect to tangent slope, motion and rates.

Applications of derivatives require modelling

Optimisation, related rates and curve analysis begin with defining quantities and constraints.

Integrals describe accumulation

Definite integrals connect area, total change and accumulation functions. The Fundamental Theorem links differentiation and integration.

Differential equations model rates

Slope fields, separable equations and initial conditions should be interpreted, not only manipulated.

BC adds further advanced structures

Use the current BC framework for parametric/polar/vector-valued functions and infinite sequences/series or other current units.

Calculator-active and calculator-inactive work require different fluency

Know when technology is permitted and what setup must still be shown.

Free-response communication matters

State equations, units and conclusions clearly. A calculator decimal without mathematical setup can be insufficient.

Multiple choice tests recognition under time

Mix conceptual, graphical and computational questions rather than drilling only derivative/integral mechanics.

Official released FRQs are high-value

Use College Board materials to learn scoring expectations and representation shifts.

Review by concept

A missed related-rates question may be a modelling failure, not a differentiation failure. Diagnose the first wrong decision.
