Singapore Mathematics and IB Mathematics overlap substantially in mathematical content but organise learning and assessment differently. A useful comparison therefore maps topics, depth, technology and assessment rather than assigning an overall winner.
What the 2026 IB–Singapore alignment study found
The International Baccalaureate published a Singapore alignment study in February 2026 comparing DP Mathematics AA/AI with Singapore-Cambridge H1, H2, H2 Further Mathematics and H3 Mathematics. The study found high alignment in learning outcomes across the Mathematics courses, while also showing that the courses do not map one-to-one by label.
- H1 Mathematics has more overlap with DP SL courses, but less content overall.
- H2 Mathematics has greater content overlap with DP HL courses, although the study’s demand analysis also places H2 closer to DP SL in some dimensions.
- H2 Further Mathematics and H3 Mathematics extend beyond the scope of the DP Mathematics courses in some content areas.
- The study supports using topic-by-topic and demand-by-demand comparison rather than saying that AA, AI, H1, H2, H2F or H3 are simple equivalents.
This is exactly why BTT’s crosswalk maps algebra, functions, calculus, modelling, statistics, technology and assessment separately instead of converting one course title directly into another.

Singapore route
The Singapore school route progresses through Primary and Secondary Mathematics, with Additional Mathematics for relevant upper-secondary students and H1/H2/Further Mathematics at JC. Examination performance is largely externally assessed and syllabus-specific.
IB route
At Diploma Programme level, students choose Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, each at SL or HL. Technology, modelling and the internal mathematical exploration form part of the IB environment in ways that do not map directly onto Singapore JC examinations.
Where transfer gaps often appear
- Technology: an IB student may use graphing technology more routinely.
- Modelling: AI in particular foregrounds mathematics in context and interpretation.
- Symbolic fluency: students moving toward Singapore H2 may need stronger no-tool algebraic execution in some contexts.
- Coursework: IB includes an internal mathematical exploration; Singapore A-Level Mathematics does not use the same assessment model.
- Topic selection: overlap does not mean identical depth or sequencing.
AA is not H2 and AI is not H1
Course labels should not be translated one-to-one. AA HL and H2 can share advanced algebra/calculus territory while differing in assessment and topic balance; AI HL can include substantial advanced Mathematics while organising it through modelling and technology. Compare actual syllabus objects.
Transfer method
- Map functions/algebra.
- Map calculus.
- Map probability/statistics.
- Map technology expectations.
- Map assessment and mathematical communication.
- Bridge only the mismatches.

Singapore H1/H2 and IB AA/AI: compare mathematical experiences without a difficulty ranking
Name the exact courses
H1 Mathematics 8865, H2 Mathematics 9758, IB AA SL/HL and IB AI SL/HL are distinct courses. ‘IB Maths’ is too broad for a useful crosswalk.
AA emphasises analytical methods strongly
Algebra, functions and calculus are prominent, especially at HL. Compare exact content with H2 rather than calling them equivalent.
AI emphasises modelling, statistics and technology
AI can involve substantial mathematical demand through applications and GDC use. It should not be described as simply easier Mathematics.
H2 combines pure and statistics in its own national sequence
Functions, calculus, vectors/complex numbers and probability/statistics form a different architecture from IB course choices.
Internal assessment is a major structural difference
IB Mathematics includes the IA exploration; Singapore H1/H2 follows its own examination structure. Transfer students may need support with mathematical writing and investigation.
Technology expectations differ
IB uses graphing technology extensively in appropriate contexts; Singapore examinations have their own calculator rules and paper conditions.
Topic overlap is not qualification equivalence
Even where both courses teach calculus or statistics, depth, notation and assessment can differ.
University prerequisites are programme-specific
Some universities distinguish AA/AI and SL/HL; others specify H2 Mathematics. Check the exact degree and intake.
Transfer diagnostic
Map functions/algebra, calculus, vectors/complex numbers, probability/statistics, modelling and technology skills.
Do not convert grades mechanically
IB 1–7 grades and Singapore A-Level grades belong to different systems. Institutions determine recognition.
Bridge strategy
Preserve secure overlap, teach missing content, then practise the destination assessment architecture.
Decision principle
Choose or transition based on curriculum fit and future requirements, not an invented global hierarchy.
