NUS, NTU and SMU do not have one common “Mathematics admissions” rule. NUS and NTU offer dedicated Mathematics or Mathematical Sciences degrees; SMU does not currently offer a standalone Mathematics bachelor’s degree, but Mathematics is a formal prerequisite for some Economics and Computer Science applicants.
The first task is therefore to identify the programme. The second is to distinguish the minimum subject prerequisite from the competitive admission profile. Universities explicitly warn that prior-year grade profiles are indicative and do not guarantee admission.
NUS Mathematics
NUS Mathematics sits within the College of Humanities and Sciences. The Mathematics major requires a good H2 pass or equivalent in Mathematics/Further Mathematics; students without the prerequisite can be required to read the MA1301/MA1301X bridging course or satisfy the relevant proficiency route. CHS open majors do not have separate IGPs for each open major—the published Humanities and Sciences profile applies to admission into CHS.
NUS quantitative programmes
NUS AY2026/27 also lists Mathematics/Further Mathematics prerequisites for Statistics, Quantitative Finance and Data Science and Applied AI. Data Science and Economics has its own direct-admission requirement and asks for a very good H2 Mathematics pass for Singapore-Cambridge A-Level applicants.
NTU Mathematical Sciences
NTU’s BSc in Mathematical Sciences requires an H2 Mathematics pass for Singapore-Cambridge A-Level applicants. The programme can later be shaped through areas such as Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Business Analytics. NTU also offers combinations including Mathematical Sciences and Economics and Mathematical and Computer Sciences, each with its own subject requirements.
SMU quantitative admissions
SMU’s current undergraduate degree list includes Economics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and other quantitative routes, but no standalone Mathematics degree. For A-Level applicants, the School of Economics requires a good pass in H2 Mathematics, H2 Further Mathematics or O-Level Additional Mathematics; Computer Science has a broader Mathematics/Physics prerequisite route.
What about grades?
Use the current university IGP only as a competitiveness guide. NUS and NTU both state that profiles change from year to year. NUS Mathematics is entered through Humanities and Sciences, so there is no separate Mathematics IGP within the open-major structure. SMU publishes programme-level IGPs such as Economics and Computer Science, not a Mathematics IGP.
A practical application checklist
- Check the exact programme prerequisite for the current admissions year.
- Check whether admission is direct to the programme or through a college/common-entry structure.
- Use the latest IGP only as an indication of competitiveness.
- Check bridging-course options if your Mathematics qualification is not the standard prerequisite.
- Prepare for first-year proof, calculus, linear algebra and programming—not just admission.

NUS, NTU and SMU quantitative routes: use programme-level requirements, not university-wide shortcuts
There is no single ‘NUS Maths requirement’
Requirements differ by programme. Current NUS examples include Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Finance and some data-science routes with H2 Mathematics/Further Mathematics prerequisites or bridging arrangements, while other programmes set different requirements. Always check the exact degree and intake.
NTU Mathematical Sciences has its own minimum subject requirements
NTU’s current Mathematical Sciences admissions information lists an H2 Mathematics pass for A-Level applicants, with qualification-specific alternatives for IB, polytechnic and other applicants. Related double-major or computing routes can add science/computing requirements.
SMU should be checked programme by programme
SMU programmes differ in quantitative emphasis and admissions arrangements. Use the current official programme/admissions page rather than infer a Mathematics prerequisite from the university name.
Minimum prerequisite and competitive profile are different
Meeting a subject prerequisite means the application can satisfy that academic condition; it does not guarantee admission. Indicative grade profiles are historical competitiveness information, not promised future cut-offs.
The 2025 A-Level/UAS transition matters
For NUS applicants using 2025-and-after Singapore-Cambridge A-Level results, current UAS computation differs from older cohorts. Historical IGP tables therefore need careful interpretation for AY2026/27 and later.
Further Mathematics can strengthen preparation without being universally required
Some mathematically intensive routes value or naturally benefit from Further Mathematics, but requirements vary. Do not tell every quantitative applicant that FM is mandatory unless the exact programme says so.
Bridging routes exist in some programmes
NUS Mathematics currently describes MA1301/MA1301X-style bridging for some students without the expected H2-equivalent background. A missing school qualification does not always imply the same outcome across programmes.
Use a three-column admissions check
For each intended degree, record: minimum subject prerequisite, latest indicative/competitive information, and additional selection components. Keep sources and intake year attached.
Do not publish one cross-university rank
A student choosing among NUS, NTU and SMU should compare the actual programme curriculum, mathematical depth, flexibility, cost and personal goals. Admissions facts can be compared without declaring a universal winner.
