NUS, NTU and SMU do not have one common “Mathematics admissions” rule. NUS and NTU offer dedicated Mathematics or Mathematical Sciences degrees; SMU does not currently offer a standalone Mathematics bachelor’s degree, but Mathematics is a formal prerequisite for some Economics and Computer Science applicants.
The first task is therefore to identify the programme. The second is to distinguish the minimum subject prerequisite from the competitive admission profile. Universities explicitly warn that prior-year grade profiles are indicative and do not guarantee admission.
NUS Mathematics
NUS Mathematics sits within the College of Humanities and Sciences. The Mathematics major requires a good H2 pass or equivalent in Mathematics/Further Mathematics; students without the prerequisite can be required to read the MA1301/MA1301X bridging course or satisfy the relevant proficiency route. CHS open majors do not have separate IGPs for each open major—the published Humanities and Sciences profile applies to admission into CHS.
NUS quantitative programmes
NUS AY2026/27 also lists Mathematics/Further Mathematics prerequisites for Statistics, Quantitative Finance and Data Science and Applied AI. Data Science and Economics has its own direct-admission requirement and asks for a very good H2 Mathematics pass for Singapore-Cambridge A-Level applicants.
NTU Mathematical Sciences
NTU’s BSc in Mathematical Sciences requires an H2 Mathematics pass for Singapore-Cambridge A-Level applicants. The programme can later be shaped through areas such as Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Business Analytics. NTU also offers combinations including Mathematical Sciences and Economics and Mathematical and Computer Sciences, each with its own subject requirements.
SMU quantitative admissions
SMU’s current undergraduate degree list includes Economics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and other quantitative routes, but no standalone Mathematics degree. For A-Level applicants, the School of Economics requires a good pass in H2 Mathematics, H2 Further Mathematics or O-Level Additional Mathematics; Computer Science has a broader Mathematics/Physics prerequisite route.
What about grades?
Use the current university IGP only as a competitiveness guide. NUS and NTU both state that profiles change from year to year. NUS Mathematics is entered through Humanities and Sciences, so there is no separate Mathematics IGP within the open-major structure. SMU publishes programme-level IGPs such as Economics and Computer Science, not a Mathematics IGP.
A practical application checklist
- Check the exact programme prerequisite for the current admissions year.
- Check whether admission is direct to the programme or through a college/common-entry structure.
- Use the latest IGP only as an indication of competitiveness.
- Check bridging-course options if your Mathematics qualification is not the standard prerequisite.
- Prepare for first-year proof, calculus, linear algebra and programming—not just admission.
