Singapore Math in International Schools | How the Method Is Adapted

International schools rarely reproduce Singapore school Mathematics exactly. They may use Singapore-influenced textbooks, bar models, CPA, number bonds or problem-solving methods while aligning the overall sequence to IB, Cambridge, U.S., British or school-designed curricula.

What usually transfers well

  • Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract representation
  • Bar modelling
  • Part–whole reasoning and number bonds
  • Strong prerequisite sequencing
  • Non-routine problem solving
  • Mathematical communication and checking

What usually needs adaptation

  • Grade/year sequence
  • Local standards alignment
  • Language and terminology
  • Calculator and technology expectations
  • Assessment format
  • Amount and style of independent practice

The textbook is not the curriculum

An international school can use a Singapore-Math textbook while teaching to a different assessment system. Families should therefore ask which programme and edition is used, what scope/sequence the school follows, and how the material is adapted to the school’s examination or standards framework.

Use the World Mathematics Curriculum Crosswalk when a school combines Singapore-inspired teaching with IB, Cambridge, UK, U.S. or Australian progression.

Singapore Math in international schools: adapt the method without pretending every school follows MOE

Singapore Math is a family of practices, not one global timetable

International schools may use commercial Singapore-style materials, selected representations or a hybrid curriculum. Distinguish the method from Singapore MOE’s national syllabus.

Map local standards first

Identify the school’s required outcomes and sequence, then decide where CPA, number bonds, bar models and variation can strengthen teaching.

Terminology may differ

Slope/gradient, exponents/indices, regrouping and other language differences can confuse students who know the concept. Build a vocabulary crosswalk.

Grade placement should use content

A Year/Grade label does not guarantee the same fractions, algebra or geometry sequence. Diagnose prerequisites before assigning a Singapore textbook level.

Bar models can bridge curricula

They are particularly useful for part-whole, comparison, fraction and ratio relationships, but should not replace algebra when students are ready for symbolic efficiency.

CPA should be responsive

Older students with a new concept may still benefit from a diagram or manipulative. Younger students who already understand should not be held in concrete work unnecessarily.

Assessment alignment matters

If the school assesses open modelling, explanation or a different notation, students need practice in that destination format alongside Singapore-style problem solving.

Teacher knowledge determines quality

A commercial book cannot diagnose misconceptions or choose representations. Professional understanding is the transferable asset.

Avoid importing workload as pedagogy

More worksheets are not what makes the method Singaporean. Coherent progression, representation, variation, fluency and problem solving are more important.

Support multilingual learners

Mathematical language can be explicitly taught while diagrams reduce unnecessary linguistic load. Then reconnect visual reasoning to precise target-language explanation.

Use local examples

Contexts, currencies and measurement conventions can be adapted without changing the underlying mathematical relationship.

Evaluate adaptation by transfer

If students can solve unfamiliar problems and move among representations, the adaptation is working. Fidelity to a textbook page is not the goal.
