Singapore Math grade-level conversion is only a starting approximation. A U.S. Grade 4 student, UK Year 5 student and Singapore Primary 4 student may be similar in age, but their Mathematics sequence, textbook edition and prior experience can differ enough that a direct conversion is unsafe for placement.
Use age/year only as the first filter
International families often begin with a simple age equivalence. That is useful for locating a likely book range. The final decision should be based on prerequisite knowledge and the exact programme edition.
Why conversions fail
- Topics can appear earlier or later in different systems.
- One programme may expect more word-problem representation.
- Another may introduce formal algebra earlier.
- Textbook editions can be adapted to different national standards.
- A learner can be advanced in one mathematical corridor and weak in another.
The safer method
- Identify the likely age/year equivalent.
- Identify the exact Singapore-Math programme.
- Use its placement test or prerequisite checklist.
- Inspect errors by concept, not total score alone.
- Start where the first important prerequisite gap appears.

Do not hold a learner back unnecessarily
If only one prerequisite is weak, repair that object and continue. Placement should produce the shortest coherent route forward, not lock a child into a lower label for an entire year.

Check magnitude, operations and place-value understanding because these support later strands.
Fractions are a high-value placement signal
Compare fraction meaning, equivalence, operations and ratio preparation. Curriculum timing differs internationally.
Geometry and measurement can be sequenced differently
A student may know advanced arithmetic but have missed a geometry convention or vice versa.
Statistics/data strands vary
Do not infer coverage from overall grade level. Sample the strand.
Secondary conversion becomes less reliable
US Algebra/Geometry courses, UK GCSE tiers/courses, Australian senior pathways and Singapore integrated Mathematics diverge significantly.
Use a content matrix
For each domain, mark secure, unfamiliar terminology, partially learnt or missing. This is more actionable than ‘one year ahead/behind’.
Do not publish official-equivalence claims
School placement, qualification recognition and admissions equivalence are determined by institutions, not by a tutoring conversion table.

Choose the level where most prerequisites are stable and bridge isolated gaps rather than forcing an entire lower level.
