NMO∑ is the National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore, an NUS High School initiative working in partnership with the Singapore Mathematical Society. NUS High describes its aims as generating interest in Mathematics among primary-school students, cultivating enthusiasm, stretching mathematical potential and nurturing mathematical talent.
This page uses the current official form NMO∑. Older material and even some organiser updates may use the letters “NMOS”; BTT treats those as references to the same NUS High competition rather than creating separate owners.
What the competition route should build
A primary olympiad should expand the learner’s mathematical repertoire without weakening the school foundation. Preparation should make the learner better at seeing relationships, testing cases, organising information and explaining why an answer must be true—not merely faster at recognising rehearsed puzzle types.
The BTT preparation loop
- Attempt independently. Let the problem expose the learner’s natural representation and first decision.
- Classify the obstruction. Is the difficulty arithmetic, representation, counting, geometry, pattern recognition or strategy?
- Repair the smallest missing prerequisite. Do not reteach an entire level when one dependency is weak.
- Compare two methods. Ask which is more reliable, shorter or easier to generalise.
- Return later. A remembered solution is not yet transferable knowledge.
Mathematical foundations
Primary olympiad work commonly rewards strong control of number relationships, arithmetic, fractions, ratio, geometry, logical casework, pattern structure and elementary counting. These are not separate from school Mathematics; olympiad questions recombine them under less obvious conditions.

Do not train only for one paper
If preparation works only when a question closely resembles a previously seen question, it has not produced enough transfer. Mix domains, remove chapter labels and ask the learner to explain what information matters before calculating.

No. NMO∑ is the NUS High primary-school competition route. The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) is a separate Singapore Mathematical Society competition with Junior, Senior and Open sections.
