There is no universal DSA points table for Mathematics Olympiad medals. DSA is school-specific. A competition result can provide evidence of mathematical interest or aptitude, but the relevant talent area, selection criteria, interview/test process and available places are determined by the school.
Start with the school’s actual talent area
MOE’s DSA application system lets applicants choose from talent areas offered by schools. If a school does not offer a Mathematics or related STEM talent area, a Mathematics competition certificate does not create one.
Example: Hwa Chong Institution
For the 2026 DSA-Sec exercise for 2027 admission, Hwa Chong listed STEM talent areas including Mathematics/Science, Science Research and Computing. HCI states that shortlisting uses available applicant information and that in-person selection may include interviews and/or selection tests. It also explicitly notes that meeting criteria does not guarantee shortlisting or an offer.
What competition evidence can show
- Sustained interest in non-routine Mathematics
- Experience with competition problem solving
- Evidence of progression over time
- Potentially, strong performance relative to a competition cohort
What it cannot prove by itself
- That the applicant meets a particular school’s current selection criteria.
- That one competition is automatically “worth more” than another.
- That a medal guarantees an interview or offer.
- That the student can explain their thinking under a school’s selection process.
Build a mathematical record, not a certificate pile
If DSA is a possible future route, the healthiest preparation is still genuine mathematical development: deep problem solving, proof, curiosity, school participation and the ability to explain Mathematics. Competition outcomes can document that development; they should not replace it.

Olympiad results and DSA: understand what competition evidence can and cannot establish
DSA is programme- and school-specific
Direct School Admission criteria vary by school, talent area and year. A Mathematics competition result may be relevant evidence for some pathways, but no generic web page can promise that a medal secures admission. Families must check the current school’s published criteria and process.
A result is one piece of evidence
Competition performance can show experience with non-routine Mathematics, but selectors may consider broader evidence such as sustained achievement, selection tests, interviews or school-specific requirements. Treat the portfolio as evidence of development rather than a collection of guaranteed points.
Do not reverse-engineer a child around admission
Choosing every competition solely because it might look useful can create a fragmented schedule. The stronger route is sustained mathematical development with a small number of meaningful opportunities to demonstrate it.
Keep records accurately
Retain official certificates, result statements and competition details. Record the year, category and organiser so achievements can be represented precisely. Do not inflate participation into an award or imply a ranking the organiser did not issue.
Prepare for mathematical conversations
If a selection process includes problem solving or interview-style discussion, the student should be able to explain how they think, recover after a false start and respond to hints. Memorised model solutions are weak preparation for interactive reasoning.
School fit still matters
A successful DSA outcome leads to years in a school, not merely an admission moment. Families should understand the programme, expectations, travel and overall school environment as well as the talent route.
Competition results have limits
A single high score does not prove universal mathematical ability, and a disappointing result does not prove lack of potential. Different contests sample different domains and formats.
Use current official information
DSA timelines and criteria change. This page should explain how to interpret competition evidence; current MOE and school pages should determine deadlines, eligibility and required submissions.
Ethical portfolio building
The student’s record should reflect real work. Coaching can develop skill and help organise evidence, but adults should not manufacture explanations or claims the student cannot substantiate.
Long-term value
Even if DSA is not pursued or successful, strong olympiad training can still be worthwhile when it develops mathematical reasoning. Keeping that educational value separate from admission outcome protects the learner from treating one selection result as the purpose of all previous work.
