Transfer and Retention Validation | Does the Repair Survive?

A student solving the correction example immediately after teaching is encouraging, but it is not strong evidence that the Mathematics is secure.

A stronger repair should survive change

• Different numbers and wording.
• A different representation or context.
• Less tutor prompting.
• A mixture with other topics.
• A delay before the idea is used again.
• Relevant examination load and time pressure.

Transfer asks whether the learner can recognise and use the idea when the surface changes. Retention asks whether the capability remains available later. Both matter if the goal is independent Mathematics rather than short-term imitation.
