H2 Mathematics 9758 | Discrete Random Variables and Binomial Distribution

H2 Mathematics Discrete Random Variables and Binomial Distribution is a canonical JC topic guide for Singapore-Cambridge H2 Mathematics 9758, aligned to the 2027 SEAB syllabus. It is designed to sit between the stable mathematical object in BTT’s Knowledge Warehouse and the actual H2 examination demand.

A random variable turns outcomes into numerical values. The binomial distribution then models a very specific repeated-trial situation; students should verify its assumptions before entering n and p into a calculator.

The 2027 syllabus includes discrete random variables, probability distributions, expectation and variance, the binomial model B(n,p), conditions for its suitability, and binomial mean/variance.

Discrete distribution control

A probability distribution must assign non-negative probabilities whose total is 1. Expectation is the probability-weighted mean; variance measures spread around that expectation. Before using calculator commands, make sure the table itself is a valid distribution.

When is binomial appropriate?

  • Fixed number n of trials.
  • Each trial has two relevant outcomes (success/failure).
  • Probability p of success remains constant.
  • Trials are independent under the model.

If sampling is without replacement from a small population, p can change and independence can fail. Do not label a random variable binomial merely because there are “successes”.

Mean and variance

For X~B(n,p), E(X)=np and Var(X)=np(1−p). These formulas are useful for solving inverse problems too: given a mean and variance, infer n or p where possible.

Calculator discipline

Translate wording carefully into P(X≤k), P(X<k), P(X≥k) or P(a≤X≤b). “At least”, “more than”, “fewer than” and complements are common sources of one-unit errors.

H2 examination control

  1. State the mathematical model or condition before calculating.
  2. Keep exact values until the question requires approximation.
  3. Show enough working to expose the method; unsupported incorrect answers earn no marks.
  4. Use the approved graphing calculator as a tool, not as a substitute for interpretation.
  5. Re-read the answer in the context of the original question.
