H1 Mathematics 8865 is the Singapore-Cambridge A-Level Mathematics route designed particularly to support university study in business and the social sciences while still developing algebra, calculus, statistics, modelling and mathematical reasoning. For the 2027 examination, it uses one three-hour paper marked out of 100.
The paper is weighted toward Probability and Statistics: Section A contains 40 marks of Pure Mathematics, while Section B contains 60 marks of Probability and Statistics. SEAB also specifies at least one real-world application question worth at least 12 marks, so students must be able to combine ideas rather than revise every chapter as a sealed unit.
H1 is not simply “easy H2”. The syllabus has a different purpose and boundary. It includes important algebra/calculus foundations and a substantial statistics route, while excluding many of the deeper Pure Mathematics topics that define H2 9758.
H1 8865 Pure Mathematics
Functions and graphs
The 2027 syllabus includes exponential and logarithmic functions, growth/decay, logarithm laws, graphing techniques, symmetry, intercepts, turning points and asymptotes. It deliberately excludes several H2 function-domain demands such as finding domain/range and formal inverse/composite-function work.
Equations and inequalities
Students solve quadratic equations/inequalities, simultaneous linear–quadratic systems, formulate equations from contexts and use graphical/numerical methods where appropriate. The focus is controlled modelling and solution rather than the wider H2 function architecture.
Differentiation
H1 includes derivatives of powers, exponentials and logarithms, chain rule, stationary points, tangents, local maxima/minima and optimisation. Product/quotient rules, implicit/parametric differentiation and several H2 extensions are excluded.
Integration
Integration is treated as reverse differentiation, including powers and exponentials, definite integrals and area between curves/lines. Integration by parts and substitution as H2 techniques do not define the H1 route.
H1 8865 Probability and Statistics
- Probability: counting principles, permutations/combinations, event laws, independence and simple conditional probability.
- Binomial distribution: B(n,p), modelling conditions, mean and variance.
- Normal distribution: N(μ,σ²), standard normal ideas, probabilities and linear transformations.
- Sampling: populations, random samples, sample means, Central Limit Theorem and unbiased estimates.
- Hypothesis testing: H₀/H₁, one/two-tail tests, p-values, critical regions and contextual conclusions.
- Correlation and regression: scatter plots, PMCC, least-squares regression, interpolation and extrapolation.
Who is H1 Mathematics designed for?
SEAB describes H1 as particularly appropriate for students without O-Level Additional Mathematics who need Mathematics and statistics for business or social-science study. That does not mean every business/social-science degree accepts H1 Mathematics as its only prerequisite. University admissions rules remain programme-specific.
H1 versus H2: the practical difference
| Area | H1 8865 | H2 9758 |
|---|---|---|
| Functions | Exponential/logarithmic and graphing core | Domain/range, inverse/composite, transformations and wider graph architecture |
| Calculus | Core differentiation/integration and applications | Implicit/parametric differentiation, Maclaurin, integration techniques, volumes, differential equations |
| Vectors/complex numbers | Not core H1 content | Explicit H2 topics |
| Statistics | 60% of paper | 60 marks of Paper 2, alongside wider Pure Mathematics |
Preparation sequence
- Repair algebra and graph reading first.
- Build calculus from meaning, not formula memorisation.
- Keep statistics active throughout the year because it dominates the paper weighting.
- Practise real-world application problems that integrate more than one topic.
- Use the approved graphing calculator intelligently, but show mathematical steps when the question requires them.
