PSLE Readiness Spine
Primary 5 is where your child stops “learning topics” and starts building PSLE readiness: stamina, strategy, and accuracy under time. This is the year to make Primary 6 calm instead of chaotic.

What Changes in Primary 5
Primary 5 installs the PSLE core systems:
- Fractions/decimals/percentage become one blended system
- Problem sums become longer and more integrated
- Children must develop time-awareness and checking habits early
- Accuracy matters more because questions are multi-step
The main shift is: performance-building, not just topic coverage.
The 4 Things That Must Be Stable by End of Primary 5
1) Fractions–decimals–percentage as ONE system
Not three chapters — one connected system that converts smoothly.
2) Proportional thinking (the engine behind hard questions)
Many upper primary problems are really “comparison and scaling” problems.
3) Geometry and measurement foundations must be clean
Weak foundations here become huge marks loss in Primary 6.
4) Exam habits begin now (time + accuracy + checking)
Primary 6 is not the time to discover time management. Start the workflow now.
Common Primary 5 Failure Patterns
- Treating conversions as tricks → no stability under pressure
- “Can do homework, cannot do timed papers” → workflow missing
- Marks loss from units/labels/layout → structure gap
- Weak error review → same mistakes repeating monthly
- Too much volume, too little feedback → practise without improvement
How to Use This Spine (simple parent workflow)
- Build a weekly cycle: learn → practise → review errors → retest.
- Do timed sets early (short, not brutal).
- Build an error log that categorises mistakes (concept / method / reading / careless).
- Retest weaknesses weekly until they stop appearing.
