PRIMARY 4 MATHEMATICS

Problem-Solving Spine

Primary 4 is the year children stop relying on “familiar question types” and must start using methods across unfamiliar situations. This is where problem-solving becomes a skill, not a guess.

What Changes in Primary 4

Primary 4 is where non-routine questions become common:

  • Fractions and decimals deepen
  • Factors/multiples start appearing
  • Geometry becomes more layered
  • Data representation becomes more demanding

The main shift is: strategy thinking (selecting the right approach).

The 4 Things That Must Be Stable by End of Primary 4

1) Fractions & decimals stability

If this is weak, Primary 5 becomes unnecessarily stressful.

2) Method selection (choose the right tool)

Children must learn to ask: “What relationship is this question showing?”

3) Multi-step accuracy (with checking)

Longer solutions mean more chances for small mistakes. A checking routine is essential.

4) Models/diagrams as thinking tools

Diagrams are not decoration — they help children “see” relationships clearly.

Common Primary 4 Failure Patterns

  • “I can do the topic, but I fail the problem sums” → strategy gap
  • Weak fraction-decimal sense → slow and uncertain work
  • No labels/units → silent marks loss
  • Messy steps → correct idea, wrong execution
  • Skipping checking → repeated avoidable errors

How to Use This Spine (simple parent workflow)

  1. Build concept → build method → practise variations.
  2. Train children to write what each number represents (labels).
  3. Keep an error log: “What type of mistake is this?”
  4. Weekly retest of the two weakest skills.
