Word problems in Secondary 2 are where many capable students get emotionally exhausted. They read the question, understand the English, and still don’t know how to start. In Sec 1, many word problems are predictable. In Sec 2, the questions become less direct: more steps, more hidden relationships, more mixing of topics like ratio, speed, percentage change, algebra, and geometry reasoning. Students who rely on memorised patterns start to fail because the pattern isn’t obvious anymore.
This is also where tuition can accidentally create dependence. If the student is always shown the method immediately, they learn to wait for the method instead of training the skill of choosing it.
