Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) and Its Impact on Secondary Mathematics
Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) is changing Secondary Mathematics in Singapore. Learn what it means for your child, how subject levels work, and how Bukit Timah Tutor helps students thrive.
Introduction
From 2024 onwards, Singapore has implemented Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB) for all Secondary 1 students. This marks the end of the traditional Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical) streams. Instead, students are placed into Posting Groups 1, 2, or 3, but more importantly, they can take different subjects—including Mathematics—at the level best suited to their strengths.
For parents, this change brings both opportunities and questions: What does Full SBB mean for Mathematics? How does it affect my child’s future pathways? And most crucially, how can tuition support ensure success under this new system?
What is Full SBB?
The New System
- No more fixed streams: Instead of being bound to Express, NA, or NT, students can now take subjects at different subject levels.
- Posting Groups: Students are placed into Posting Groups 1–3, but this does not limit their subject options.
- Subject-Level Customisation: A student might take Mathematics at a higher level while taking another subject at a different level.

Impact on Mathematics
1. Flexible Subject Levels
- Students with strong foundations may take Mathematics at a higher subject level than their Posting Group.
- Conversely, if a student struggles, they may take Mathematics at a level that ensures better mastery before moving up.
2. Pathway to A Math and Beyond
- Students who demonstrate strength in Secondary 1–2 can opt for Additional Mathematics (A Math) in upper secondary.
- A Math is a gateway subject for H2 Mathematics at A-Levels or IB, and is vital for STEM-related university courses.
3. Continuous Review
- Placement is not fixed; schools periodically review subject levels.
- Students can “level up” in Mathematics if they show readiness.
Opportunities and Challenges for Parents
Opportunities
- Personalisation ensures your child learns at the right pace.
- Strong students can advance further, preventing boredom and stagnation.
- Students get more chances to catch up if they start weaker but improve later.
Challenges
- Parents may find it confusing to navigate multiple subject levels.
- A child doing Math at a higher level must be prepared for increased workload and difficulty.
- Misalignment between subject levels may cause stress (e.g., stronger in Math but weaker in language subjects).
